This machine just hit the shelves last month(Feb 2013). We have been pretty excited to get our hands on it ever since it was first announced back in October of 2012. We were also very curious to see if this machine could beat out the Whynter ARC-14SH as one of the best portable air conditioner units available online. Since the Honeywell MN12CES had received such good ratings last summer, we had very high hopes before trying this unit out.

Now it’s unfortunately not a dual hose machine, but it does have the capability of heating. If you’ve purchased the MN12CES and were satisfied with it’s results, you may notice a difference in noise level when compared to the MM14CHCS. Yeah, it may be louder, but I believe it cools much better and works much more efficient overall.

Honeywell MM14CHCS 14,000 BTU – What is it?

The Honeywell MM14CHCS is roughly the same size as its single hose predecessor. Although, this machine is a 4-in-1 multifunction unit that operates as a regular AC, a dehumidifier (3.96 pints/h), a heater (13,000 BTU’s) and a regular fan (3 speeds). It’s also a very eco-friendly unit that uses R-410A refrigerant to help preserve the environment.

This machine runs at 14,000 BTU’s and is ideal for rooms up to 500 ft.². Now if you’ve seen this AC online, you may have noticed it advertised as being able to cover up to 700 ft.² That does seem a little far fetched in my opinion, but if anybody out there has a room at that size to test it in, please let us know.

Like the MN12CES, the MM14CHCS has a very attractive front panel LED display. It has changed a little bit, but it’s just as easy to understand as before. This unit also comes with a remote control, a 24 hour timer and wheels for easy mobility. The MM14CHCS also has the same excellent auto-evaporative system which you can choose to have manually notify you, or continuously drain with no worry.

Honeywell MM14CHCS 14,000 BTU – What I liked?

First off, the Honeywell MM14CHCS 14,000 BTU met my expectations and more when it came to cooling my room quickly and maintaining the temperature. I almost want to say it’s just as good and maybe even better than the Whynter ARC-14SH in the cooling department, but it’s way too early in the season to make that call. Over the past five days we’ve easily been able to keep the temperature at approx. 68°F (20°Cfrom 83°F (28°C). That’s really nothing considering the weather, but this unit will get its true test over the next few months.

As for its noise level while in AC operation, I think it does an excellent job versus some other brands that I’ve tried. Any experienced portable AC user should know how loud they can potentially get, so I think the MM14CHCS does a really good job at operating effectively but not as loud. In my opinion though, it’s not as quiet as the MN12CES.

Last but not least I really like this machines draining system. It’s very similar to the MN12CES, which allows you to use a manual setting or a continuous setting. It’s no bucket design will automatically evaporate any excess condensation, although if there happens to be excess water your machine will stop running and show a warning light (when set on manual). You then need to empty the lower drain plug before you can continue to use it again.

Now if you don’t want to ever worry about excess drainage again. Simply attach a hose to the back of the unit’s drain plug and feed the other end into a large bucket, sink or even through a hole out into your backyard. Now there is nowhere for your water to build up or to cause any downtime.

Honeywell MM14CHCS 14,000 BTU – What I didn’t Like?

Last year my problem with the MN12CES was that it was only a single hose and also had no heater. This year Honeywell blessed us with heating capabilities, but my only real problem with it is that it’s not as quiet. Also, the price is a little high for a single hose unit in my opinion. When it was first released it’s price of $446.00 was acceptable, although it’s currently listed at about $599.99. Which is a bit pricey in my opinion.

Another thing that I didn’t like about this unit was that they still didn’t add handles to the sides. Adding handles makes it so much easier to carry up and down the stairs, but it’s only a little flaw in their overall design.

Last but not least, I noticed that all advertising (even on Honeywell’s website) says that the heater BTU power is at 13,000. Although, when you look at the user manual it states that it’s only at 12,000. I know it’s not a big difference and I can’t really feel the difference in 1,000 BTU’s on a heater, but it’s still a little confusing.

Honeywell MM14CHCS 14,000 BTU – Overall Thoughts

Overall, I’m very happy with the performance of this machine so far. Remember it’s still very early in the season and the true humidity and heat haven’t quite hit us yet. Although for the time being, I’m very confident that this portable air conditioner will stand the test and stack up real close to Whynter for dominance in the portable AC market.

Keep checking back as we will be updating this review as the summer approaches and rolls on.
