Mini Portable Air Conditioner or Mini Evaporative Air Cooler. Which one is it?

You may have noticed while searching for a portable AC online these new little gadgets that claim to be mini hand held ac’s. When I first saw them I thought they looked pretty cool. Something I can purchase that works like an AC that isn’t as big and won’t take up any space. On top of that, I can walk around with it. As I did more research, I realized that this mini device isn’t really an AC. Although some manufacturers label this a mini portable ac, it’s really a mini evaporative cooler.

If you look at the mechanics of how it works you will realize that it actually functions exactly like a regular air cooler. This mini handheld evaporative cooler requires water and a sponge and slowly generates a cool breeze as the water passes through the device. Most of these devices take up very little energy and only require a USB port on your laptop to power up. Like an evaporative cooler it works best in dry heat conditions, although functions very poorly in damp humid weather. Don’t get me wrong, this device does cool your space, but a very small one at that.  Expecting this mini handheld device to cover your room is a far stretch but it will definitely keep you cool within 1 to 2 feet of your face. This might not be the best portable air conditioner to cool your room this summer. Although if you’re looking for an alternative to keep you cool while you travel or even while you’re doing work on your laptop outside. This is something you should consider.

If you do choose to purchase this device make sure you watch out for the cheap imitations. “Handy Cooler” is the most respected brand of these types of coolers on the market. The reviews online are actually very good so if you’re in doubt about which manufacturer to go with double check what the consumers are saying.
